Sapphire has a Mohs hardness of 9 and is exceptionally durable. It can be safely cleaned with lukewarm water and gentle soap. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. For energetic cleansing, moonlight and selenite charging are ideal. Sage smoke and sound vibrations also work well. Avoid harsh chemicals. Australia (Queensland and New South Wales) produces dark blue and parti-coloured sapphires. Other significant sources include Thailand, Cambodia, Tanzania, Montana (USA), Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Sapphire is the blue variety of corundum, coloured by trace iron and titanium. "Fancy sapphires" in pink, yellow, orange (padparadscha), green, and purple also exist. Heat treatment to improve colour and clarity is extremely common — an estimated 95% of commercial sapphires are treated. Montana sapphires have gained popularity as an ethically sourced, traceable option from regulated US mines.
