Lapis Lazuli Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with lapis lazuli — from healing properties to geology.

Lapis lazuli has been treasured since ancient Egyptian times for its intense celestial blue colour and its association with wisdom, truth and royal power. It stimulates the desire for knowledge, enhances intellectual ability and encourages honest self-expression through activation of the throat and third eye chakras. This deeply spiritual stone helps you speak your truth with clarity and confidence while connecting you to your inner wisdom and higher purpose.
Lapis lazuli is the stone of royal wisdom and truthful expression, a deep celestial blue crystal that has been prized by pharaohs, scholars and mystics for over six thousand years. Its golden pyrite inclusions symbolise the stars scattered across a midnight sky, representing the infinite knowledge available to those who seek it. Lapis lazuli teaches that true wisdom is not simply knowing facts but understanding yourself, speaking your truth with integrity and having the humility to keep learning.
Lapis lazuli is believed to support the throat, larynx and thyroid, easing conditions related to suppressed self-expression and communication. It is particularly valued for its ability to lower blood pressure, calm inflammation and support the immune system. Crystal healers use lapis lazuli to ease migraine headaches, support the nervous system during periods of intellectual overwork, and help those struggling with insomnia caused by an inability to quiet the mind.
Wear lapis lazuli necklace near the throat chakra to enhance communication and self-expression. Place it on your third eye during meditation to access deeper states of awareness and inner truth.
The finest lapis displays a deep, even royal blue with evenly scattered golden pyrite flecks. Avoid pieces with excessive white calcite veining unless the pattern particularly appeals to you.
Lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite, with sparkling inclusions of pyrite and white streaks of calcite. The finest quality lapis has been mined in the mountains of Badakhshan, Afghanistan for over 6,000 years.

Elements

Lapis lazuli has a Mohs hardness of 5–6 and is somewhat porous, so avoid prolonged water exposure. A very brief rinse under lukewarm water is acceptable if dried immediately. For safer energetic cleansing, use moonlight bathing, selenite charging, sage smoke or sound vibrations. Avoid saltwater, chemicals, perfumes and ultrasonic cleaners. Sunlight can fade lapis lazuli over time. Store in a soft pouch away from direct light.
Charge lapis lazuli under the full moon overnight or on a selenite plate. Avoid sunlight which can fade its colour. Sound charging with a singing bowl tuned to the throat or third eye chakra works beautifully. Hold it against your third eye and programme it with intentions for wisdom, truth and authentic self-expression.
Lapis lazuli has been mined for over 6,000 years, with the world's oldest and most famous deposits in the Sar-i-Sang mines of Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan. These mines, situated at over 3,000 metres in the Hindu Kush mountains, have operated continuously since the Neolithic period and supplied the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. The ultramarine pigment ground from Afghan lapis was more valuable than gold during the Renaissance and was reserved for painting the Virgin Mary's robes. Russia's Lake Baikal region (particularly the Malo-Bystrinskoye deposit) is the second-most important source, producing fine material since the 18th century. Chile's Atacama Region, particularly the Flor de los Andes mine, produces lighter-coloured material. Other sources include Myanmar, Pakistan, Angola, and Colorado, USA. Lapis is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite (the blue mineral), calcite (white), and pyrite (gold flecks). Ethical sourcing of Afghan lapis is complicated by the country's political situation — revenues from the Badakhshan mines have at various times funded armed groups. Chilean and Russian lapis offer more transparent supply chains.
Lapis lazuli has one of the longest and most distinguished cultural histories of any gemstone, stretching back over 6,500 years to the Neolithic period. The ancient Sumerians believed lapis carried the soul of their gods, and the Epic of Gilgamesh describes trees bearing lapis lazuli fruit. Ancient Egyptians treasured lapis above almost all other stones — Cleopatra's eye shadow was ground lapis, and the golden death mask of Tutankhamun features extensive lapis inlay. In the Bible, the sapphire of the ancients was almost certainly lapis lazuli. The stone held supreme significance in Mesopotamian, Persian, and Indus Valley civilisations. When ground into ultramarine pigment, lapis became the most expensive paint in Renaissance Europe — more costly per gram than gold. It was reserved for the most sacred subjects, particularly the Virgin Mary's robes, by masters including Vermeer, Michelangelo, and Titian. Vermeer's lavish use of ultramarine may have contributed to his financial difficulties. In Buddhist art, lapis represents the Medicine Buddha. In Islamic culture, the stone has deep connections to divinity and heaven. Catherine the Great decorated an entire room in lapis at the Catherine Palace. Afghanistan's lapis mines have operated continuously for over 6,000 years, making them among the longest-working mines in human history.
Lapis lazuli is the traditional stone of Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December), the zodiac's philosopher and truth-seeker. Sagittarius's lifelong quest for wisdom, truth, and expanded understanding aligns perfectly with lapis lazuli's 6,500-year history as a stone of wisdom and royal truth. The stone also resonates powerfully with Aquarius (20 January – 18 February), supporting the sign's intellectual independence and humanitarian vision. Pisces (19 February – 20 March) benefits from lapis's ability to bring structure and articulation to spiritual insights. Taurus (20 April – 20 May) finds lapis supportive as a stone of genuine value and enduring worth. Virgo (23 August – 22 September) benefits from lapis's calming influence on mental anxiety. As a stone of truth, wisdom, and royal authority, lapis lazuli works powerfully with any sign in a leadership position or engaged in the pursuit of deeper understanding.
Lapis lazuli works primarily with the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) and the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha). The Third Eye governs intuitive wisdom and spiritual insight; the Throat Chakra governs communication and the expression of truth. Lapis lazuli uniquely bridges these centres, facilitating the communication of deep wisdom — not just speaking truth, but speaking universal truth with authority and confidence. This is why lapis has been the stone of royalty, prophets, and wise rulers for millennia. When the Third Eye receives insight and the Throat is open to express it, you become a channel for wisdom. To work with lapis on the Third Eye, place it on your forehead and invite wisdom to flow through you. For Throat Chakra work, wear lapis as a pendant at the throat and focus on speaking with the authority of truth. The gold flecks of pyrite in lapis connect it to the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura), adding personal power to the expression of wisdom. Lapis is one of the most complete upper-chakra stones — Third Eye for vision, Throat for expression, Solar Plexus for confidence.
Genuine lapis lazuli has a deep royal blue colour with visible golden pyrite flecks and sometimes white calcite veins. The biggest fakes are dyed howlite and dyed jasper — rub the stone with acetone (nail polish remover) and check for blue dye transfer. "Swiss lapis" and "German lapis" are dyed jasper, not lapis at all. Sodalite is sometimes sold as lapis — it is lighter blue and lacks pyrite. At Mohs 5-5.5, genuine lapis can be scratched with a steel knife. Real lapis has some weight to it. Under UV light, genuine lapis may fluoresce white from calcite content. Synthetic lapis exists but is uncommon. The presence of irregularly distributed pyrite specks is a strong indicator of authenticity. Be suspicious of uniform, flawless deep blue without any pyrite or calcite inclusions.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Lapis Lazuli to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I speak my truth with wisdom, clarity, and confidence”
“My third eye is open and I perceive the deeper truth of all things”
“I honour my inner knowledge and trust my intellectual power”
“I communicate with authority and authentic expression”
“I am connected to ancient wisdom and universal understanding”
“I release confusion and embrace mental clarity and focus”
“I am a leader who inspires others through honesty and insight”
“My creative vision is guided by truth and higher purpose”
Find a quiet, dignified space. Sit upright with lapis lazuli on your Third Eye or held at throat level. Take three deep breaths, focusing on truth and clarity. Step 1: Feel the ancient weight of the stone and connect with its millennia of wisdom. Step 2: Visualise deep royal blue light emanating from the stone, filling your head with clarity. Step 3: See the golden pyrite flecks within the blue as stars in a night sky — you are gazing into cosmic wisdom. Step 4: Focus on your Throat Chakra and allow blue light to clear any blocks to truthful communication. Step 5: Ask for insight on a question you have been contemplating — lapis reveals truth. Step 6: Listen in the silence for the wisdom that emerges — it may come as words, images, or knowing. Step 7: Affirm: "I speak my truth with clarity and wisdom." Duration: 15-20 minutes. Best practised during study, before important conversations, or on Thursdays (Jupiter's day). Expect mental sharpness, throat tingling, or sudden clarity on complex issues. Close by stating one truth you have learned.
Lapis lazuli is a mid-to-premium stone with Afghan material being the gold standard. Tumbled stones £2-£5, raw chunks £5-£15, polished palm stones £8-£25. Spheres £15-£40 for 4-5 cm with good colour, £40-£100+ for larger pieces. Towers £10-£30. The best lapis has intense, uniform royal blue with minimal white calcite and attractive pyrite flecks. Afghan (Badakhshan) material is most prized, followed by Chilean. Key factors: colour intensity and uniformity, pyrite distribution, calcite content (less is more), origin. Jewellery: cabochon pendants in silver £10-£30, faceted silver £20-£50. More expensive than sodalite, comparable to mid-grade turquoise, cheaper than sapphire. Red flags: dyed howlite or jasper sold as lapis, Swiss or German lapis (which is dyed jasper), uniform colour with no natural variation. Fine Afghan lapis holds value; lower grades do not.

Lapis Lazuli FAQs

Common questions about lapis lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a deep royal blue stone treasured since ancient Egyptian times for its connection to wisdom, truth and royal power. It enhances intellectual ability and encourages honest self-expression.

Lapis lazuli stimulates wisdom and good judgement, enhances verbal and written communication, boosts intellectual ability and memory, promotes self-awareness and honest self-expression, and activates psychic abilities.

Wear lapis lazuli as a necklace near the Throat chakra for enhanced communication. Place it on your Third Eye during meditation for deeper wisdom and insight. Keep it on your desk while studying or writing for intellectual clarity.

Lapis lazuli resonates with the Third Eye chakra for intuitive insight and wisdom, and the Throat chakra for truthful, confident communication. It creates a powerful bridge between inner knowing and outward expression.

Cleanse lapis lazuli with moonlight, smudging, or sound healing. Avoid water as lapis contains calcite and pyrite inclusions that can be damaged by moisture. Never use salt water or submerge it for extended periods.

Lapis lazuli should avoid prolonged water contact. With a Mohs hardness of only 5 to 6 and porous inclusions of calcite, it can be damaged by water. Brief, gentle rinsing is acceptable but never soak or submerge this stone.

Lapis lazuli is associated with Sagittarius, Taurus and Libra. Its wisdom-enhancing energy particularly suits Sagittarius's philosophical nature and love of learning and truth-seeking.

Genuine lapis lazuli has a deep, even blue colour with scattered golden pyrite flecks and possible white calcite streaks. It feels cool and substantial. Dyed stones may leave blue residue when rubbed with acetone, and synthetic versions lack natural pyrite inclusions.

Lapis lazuli pairs well with Sodalite for enhanced communication, Amethyst for spiritual wisdom, Labradorite for mystical insight, and Clear Quartz to amplify its truth-seeking and intellectual properties.

Lapis lazuli can support sleep by calming an overactive mind and promoting access to inner wisdom through dreams. Place it on your bedside table rather than under your pillow, as its stimulating Third Eye energy may be too activating for some sleepers.
