Moonstone Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with moonstone — from healing properties to geology.

Moonstone captures the ethereal glow of the moon itself, radiating a gentle, nurturing energy that harmonises emotions and enhances intuitive abilities. Long associated with the divine feminine, new beginnings and the natural rhythms of life, it is a profoundly soothing stone for anyone experiencing emotional turbulence or hormonal fluctuations. Its soft adularescent sheen reminds us that just moon waxes and wanes, all phases of life carry their own beauty and purpose.
Moonstone is the stone of new beginnings and divine feminine intuition, its ethereal glow reflecting the ever-changing cycles of the moon that govern tides, seasons and the rhythms of life itself. It has been revered across Hindu, Roman and Norse traditions as a sacred stone of protection for travellers and a powerful enhancer of psychic awareness. Moonstone symbolises the wisdom of cyclical change, teaching that endings are simply beginnings in disguise and that your intuition is the most reliable compass you possess.
Moonstone is believed to harmonise the hormonal and reproductive systems, support fertility and ease the physical discomforts of menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. It is particularly valued for its ability to calm emotional reactivity, ease insomnia and promote lucid dreaming. Crystal healers use moonstone to support the digestive system, help the body absorb nutrients and ease fluid retention, as its lunar connection governs the water element within the body.
Place moonstone under your pillow or on your bedside table to encourage lucid dreaming and restful sleep. Wear it during the full moon to amplify its connection to lunar energy and intuitive clarity.
Seek out pieces with a strong blue or rainbow sheen that glides across the surface tilt the stone. Rainbow moonstone offers a wider spectrum of energy, while classic white moonstone is deeply calming.
Moonstone is a variety of feldspar that exhibits adularescence, a billowy internal light caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite diffracting light. The finest specimens come from Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar and Madagascar.

Elements

Moonstone has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 and can be briefly rinsed under lukewarm water. Dry immediately with a soft cloth. For energetic cleansing, moonlight is the most powerful method — leave it on a windowsill during the full moon to recharge its lunar connection. Selenite charging, sage smoke and sound cleansing are also effective. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged sunlight. Store in a soft pouch to protect its delicate adularescence.
Charge moonstone under the full moon overnight — this is by far the most powerful method for this deeply lunar stone. Place it on a windowsill where it can absorb maximum moonlight. Selenite plates are also highly effective. Avoid sunlight. Hold moonstone over your third eye or crown chakra and programme it with intentions for intuition, new beginnings and emotional harmony.
Moonstone is a variety of feldspar prized for its ethereal adularescence — a floating light effect caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite within the crystal. The finest moonstone comes from Sri Lanka, where the gem has been treasured for thousands of years and deposits in the Meetiyagoda and Dumbara areas produce the most valued blue-sheen specimens with exceptional transparency. India (particularly Bihar, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu) is the largest commercial producer, yielding abundant white, peach, and rainbow moonstone. Myanmar produces fine blue moonstone, though supplies have decreased. Other sources include Tanzania, Madagascar, Brazil, the United States (Virginia and Pennsylvania), Norway, and the European Alps (Switzerland and Austria), where the mineral was first named after the Adula Mountains. 'Rainbow moonstone' sold in the crystal market is actually a transparent variety of labradorite (a different feldspar) rather than true moonstone — both are beautiful but it's worth knowing the distinction. Moonstone has cultural significance across many traditions: in India it is considered sacred and never displayed for sale on a yellow cloth; the Romans believed it formed from solidified moonbeams.
Moonstone has been revered across cultures for thousands of years, always in connection with the moon. In Hindu tradition, moonstone is considered sacred — it is believed to have been embedded in the forehead of Ganesh since the beginning of time, and it is never displayed for sale on a yellow cloth as this is considered disrespectful. In India, moonstone is a traditional wedding gift, believed to bring harmony to the couple and ensure a long relationship. Ancient Romans believed moonstone was formed from solidified moonbeams and associated it with their lunar goddess Diana. The stone was central to Art Nouveau jewellery (1890s–1910s), where René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany used moonstone extensively in their luminous designs. In many European folk traditions, placing moonstone in the mouth during a full moon was said to reveal the future. In Sri Lanka, where the finest blue moonstones are found, the stone has been treasured for millennia and is associated with good fortune. In the modern crystal healing movement, moonstone is inextricably linked with feminine energy, intuition, and the cycles of the moon. It remains one of the most universally popular and recommended crystals, particularly for women and for work related to emotional intelligence and intuition.
Moonstone is powerfully associated with Cancer (21 June – 22 July), the zodiac sign ruled by the Moon. This connection is one of the strongest stone-sign pairings in crystal astrology. Cancer's lunar nature — emotional depth, intuition, nurturing, and cyclical rhythms — is perfectly mirrored in moonstone's energy. The stone enhances Cancer's natural gifts whilst providing stability through emotional tides. Moonstone is also deeply resonant with Pisces (19 February – 20 March), enhancing intuition and spiritual sensitivity. For Libra (23 September – 22 October), moonstone supports emotional balance and the harmonising of opposing feelings. Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) benefits from moonstone's connection to hidden depths and transformative cycles. Moonstone is particularly powerful for all signs during full moons and new moons, and for anyone with strong lunar placements in their natal chart.
Moonstone works primarily with the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) and the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), with a strong secondary connection to the Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana). The Third Eye governs intuition and inner vision; the Crown connects to spiritual consciousness; and the Sacral governs emotional flow and feminine cycles. Moonstone's lunar energy naturally activates the intuitive, receptive aspects of the upper chakras, enhancing psychic perception, dream awareness, and connection to the Divine Feminine. Its connection to the Sacral Chakra makes it particularly supportive of women's reproductive health and emotional cycles. To work with moonstone on the Third Eye, place it on your forehead during the full or new moon for amplified effect. For Sacral Chakra work, place it on the lower abdomen and connect to the rhythms of your emotional and physical cycles. Moonstone's energy waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle — it is most potent during the full moon and most receptive during the new moon.
The most common moonstone fake is opalite — a man-made glass with a uniform milky-blue glow. Real moonstone shows adularescence (a floating light) that moves within the stone as you tilt it, while opalite glows uniformly from all angles. Genuine moonstone has a Mohs hardness of 6-6.5 and will scratch with a steel knife. Glass opalite is softer. Real moonstone often has visible internal structure and may show tiny cracks or inclusions. Rainbow moonstone is technically white labradorite but is accepted in the trade — it shows multicoloured flashes rather than the floating blue light of true moonstone. Be wary of perfectly clear, uniformly glowing stones at low prices — these are almost certainly opalite. Sri Lankan moonstone is genuine but increasingly rare and expensive.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Moonstone to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I trust the cycles of life and embrace new beginnings”
“My intuition is my guiding light and I follow it with confidence”
“I am in harmony with the rhythms of the moon and nature”
“I welcome emotional balance and inner peace”
“I am open to receiving divine feminine wisdom”
“My dreams are vivid, meaningful, and filled with insight”
“I release what no longer serves me and welcome transformation”
“I honour my sensitivity as a powerful gift”
Create a feminine, nurturing space — dim lighting, soft fabrics, ideally during the evening or full moon. Lie down and place moonstone on your Sacral or Third Eye Chakra. Breathe in slow, wave-like rhythm. Step 1: Imagine the soft glow of the full moon illuminating your body with silvery-white light. Step 2: Sync your breathing to a wave pattern — inhale as the wave rises (4 counts), exhale as it recedes (6 counts). Step 3: Allow moonstone's energy to connect you to your emotional body and intuitive wisdom. Step 4: Visualise the moon's cycles — waxing, full, waning, new — and sense where you are in your own cycle. Step 5: Release any emotions that surface, allowing them to flow like water without resistance. Step 6: Ask your intuition for guidance and listen to the whispers that arise in the stillness. Step 7: Gently float back to awareness, carrying the moon's gentle wisdom. Duration: 15-20 minutes for beginners, 30+ for deep work. Best during evening or full moon. Expect emotional release, heightened intuition, vivid dreams afterward. Close with three gentle breaths and set an intention for your dreams.
Moonstone ranges broadly from affordable white to highly valued blue-sheen. White tumbles £2-£5, blue adularescence tumbles £5-£15, rainbow tumbles £4-£10. Polished: white palm stones £8-£20, blue/rainbow sheen £15-£40. Spheres £12-£30 (standard) to £40-£100+ (exceptional blue). Sri Lankan blue-sheen moonstone is most valuable: £20-£80 for small polished, more for flawless large pieces. Peach moonstone £3-£10 tumbled. Jewellery commands premiums: cabochon silver pendants £12-£25, fine blue in designer silver £30-£80, gold settings £150-£300+. Engagement rings £50 (silver) to £200-£500+ (gold). Key factors: adularescence quality (blue most prized), transparency, origin (Sri Lankan most valued). Red flags: opalite glass sold as moonstone, cracked stones at premium prices. Good investment potential for fine Sri Lankan blue moonstone.

Moonstone FAQs

Common questions about moonstone

Moonstone is a luminous crystal connected to the energy of the Moon, renowned for enhancing intuition, promoting emotional balance and supporting feminine wisdom. It glows with a soft, ethereal light called adularescence.

Moonstone enhances intuition and psychic abilities, balances emotions and hormones, promotes restful sleep and lucid dreaming, supports new beginnings and fertility, and deepens connection to the divine feminine energy.

Place moonstone under your pillow for lucid dreaming, wear it during the full moon to amplify lunar connection, carry it during times of emotional upheaval, or use it in new moon rituals for setting intentions and planting seeds of change.

Moonstone resonates with the Crown, Third Eye and Heart chakras. It opens the Crown for spiritual connection, activates the Third Eye for intuition, and soothes the Heart for emotional healing.

Moonlight is the ideal cleansing method for moonstone, honouring its lunar connection. Place it outside or on a windowsill during the full moon. You can also use smudging, sound, or a selenite plate. Avoid harsh sunlight which can diminish its sheen.

Moonstone can tolerate brief water contact but should not be soaked for long periods. At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is somewhat delicate. Use the indirect method for crystal water and avoid salt water entirely.

Moonstone is the traditional stone for Cancer, the zodiac sign ruled by the Moon. It also resonates strongly with Libra and Scorpio, supporting their emotional depth and desire for balance.

Genuine moonstone displays a soft, billowy light (adularescence) that appears to float beneath the surface when tilted. The sheen should move fluidly across the stone. Fake moonstone may have a static, painted-on shimmer or feel too lightweight.

Moonstone is one of the best crystals for sleep, promoting calm, restful slumber and vivid, meaningful dreams. Place it under your pillow or on your bedside table. It is particularly powerful when used during the full moon phase.

Moonstone pairs beautifully with Labradorite for mystical intuition, Rose Quartz for heart-moon connection, Amethyst for spiritual dreams, and Selenite for amplified lunar cleansing energy.
