Tanzanite Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with tanzanite — from healing properties to geology.

Tanzanite is an extraordinarily rare gemstone found in only one place on Earth, carrying a uniquely high vibration that activates the third eye, crown and throat chakras in a powerful trinity of spiritual communication. Its stunning violet-blue colour shifts between blue and purple depending on the light, mirroring its ability to bridge the physical and spiritual realms with remarkable clarity. Working with tanzanite can catalyse deep meditation, psychic development and profound insights into your life purpose.
Tanzanite is a stone of spiritual transformation found in only one location on Earth, making it exceptionally rare and treasured. It represents the integration of mind and heart, encouraging you to live from a place of enlightened compassion and higher purpose.
Tanzanite is believed to support the nervous system, boost immunity and aid recovery from medical procedures by calming overactive minds. It is also said to stimulate the pineal gland and enhance psychic perception when placed on the third eye.
Hold tanzanite during meditation to activate the higher chakras and receive spiritual insight. Wear it or a pendant to maintain connection to your intuitive guidance throughout the day.
Look for a rich, saturated violet-blue colour with good clarity. Tanzanite is relatively soft compared to other jewellery stones, so choose protective settings for rings and handle specimens with care.
Tanzanite is a blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, discovered in 1967 and found exclusively in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Its colour is caused by trace amounts of vanadium and is often enhanced by gentle heat treatment.

Tanzanite has a Mohs hardness of 6–7 but has perfect cleavage, making it vulnerable to knocks and sudden temperature changes. Brief lukewarm water rinses are acceptable — dry immediately. For energetic cleansing, moonlight and selenite charging are the safest methods. Sage smoke and sound vibrations also work well. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, chemicals and sunlight. Store in a padded pouch with extra protection.
Charge tanzanite under the full moon or on a selenite plate only — avoid sunlight and temperature changes. Sound charging at third eye or crown frequencies works well. Hold it above your crown chakra and programme it with intentions for spiritual awakening, psychic development and the integration of higher wisdom into daily life.
Tanzanite is found in only one place on Earth — a small area of approximately 20 square kilometres at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania. Discovered in 1967 and named by Tiffany & Co. (who recognised its marketing potential), tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Its colour is caused by trace vanadium, and virtually all commercial tanzanite is heat-treated to enhance the blue colour — untreated stones are typically brownish. Tanzanite formed during intense metamorphism approximately 585 million years ago, when the unique combination of vanadium-bearing fluids and specific pressure-temperature conditions created this extraordinary anomaly. Geologists estimate that the conditions for tanzanite's formation were so specific that the likelihood of finding another deposit is literally one in a million. The Tanzanian government controls mining through a licensing system, with the mining area divided into blocks. Block C is operated by TanzaniteOne (the largest commercial operator), whilst other blocks are worked by small-scale artisanal miners. Ethical concerns include mine safety for artisanal workers and the concentration of economic power. As a finite, single-source gemstone, tanzanite is expected to be commercially exhausted within the coming decades.
Tanzanite's cultural history is remarkably concentrated — from unknown to one of the world's most coveted gemstones in just six decades. The stone was discovered in 1967 by Maasai herders (or, in some accounts, by a Goan tailor named Manuel d'Souza) in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro. Tiffany & Co.'s legendary marketing team, led by Henry Platt, immediately recognised the stone's commercial potential and named it "tanzanite" after its country of origin — one of the most successful gem naming decisions in history. The 1968 Tiffany & Co. advertising campaign declared tanzanite "the most important gemstone discovery in over 2,000 years." In Maasai tradition, the colour blue is sacred and associated with new life — Maasai women are given tanzanite or blue beads when they give birth. This cultural connection adds depth to the stone's story. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite as a December birthstone — the first change to the birthstone list since 1912. The Tanzanian government has worked to ensure that tanzanite benefits the national economy, creating a regulated mining zone. The stone's single-source nature and finite supply have created genuine urgency — geologists estimate commercial depletion within decades, making tanzanite a potential future extinct gemstone.
Tanzanite is associated with Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December) and Pisces (19 February – 20 March). For Sagittarius, tanzanite's violet-blue energy supports the sign's philosophical depth and desire for profound spiritual understanding. For Pisces, the stone enhances intuition and spiritual awareness with unusual clarity. Tanzanite also resonates with Gemini (21 May – 20 June), adding spiritual depth to intellectual curiosity. Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) benefits from tanzanite's ability to open spiritual awareness within a grounded framework. As a December birthstone and a stone of spiritual transformation, tanzanite is recommended for signs seeking to deepen their spiritual practice and for anyone drawn to work with one of the rarest gemstones on Earth.
Tanzanite works primarily with the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna), Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), and Throat Chakra (Vishuddha). The Third Eye governs spiritual perception; the Crown connects to higher consciousness; and the Throat governs the communication of spiritual experience. Tanzanite's violet-blue colour places it at the intersection of all three upper chakras, creating a unified field of spiritual awareness and articulate expression. To work with tanzanite in chakra practice, place it at the Third Eye during meditation and focus on receiving spiritual insight. The stone then helps channel these insights downward through the Throat for clear communication. Tanzanite is remarkable for those who receive spiritual information but struggle to articulate or ground it — it completes the circuit from reception (Crown) through perception (Third Eye) to expression (Throat). As one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, tanzanite carries a concentrated, precious energy that enhances whichever upper-chakra work you bring to it.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Tanzanite to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I open myself to higher spiritual wisdom”
“I trust my intuition to guide my path forward”
“I communicate my truth with clarity and compassion”
“I am connected to the divine through my Third Eye”
“I release fear and embrace spiritual transformation”
“I honour my psychic gifts and inner knowing”
“My spiritual awareness deepens with every breath”

Tanzanite FAQs

Common questions about tanzanite

Tanzanite is an extraordinarily rare violet-blue gemstone found only in Tanzania, carrying a uniquely high vibration that activates the higher chakras and catalyses deep spiritual development.

Tanzanite activates the Third Eye, Crown and Throat chakras simultaneously, deepens meditation and spiritual insight, enhances psychic abilities, supports discovery of life purpose, and facilitates communication with spiritual guides.

Hold tanzanite during meditation to activate the higher chakras and receive spiritual insight. Wear it as earrings or a pendant for continuous intuitive guidance. Place it on your Third Eye for deep visionary experiences.

Tanzanite resonates with the Third Eye for psychic vision, the Crown for spiritual connection, and the Throat for spiritual communication. This triple activation creates a powerful channel for higher awareness.

Cleanse tanzanite with moonlight, smudging, or a selenite plate. Avoid water, sunlight and ultrasonic cleaners. Tanzanite is relatively delicate at 6.5 to 7 Mohs and can be damaged by harsh cleansing methods.

Brief water contact is generally acceptable for tanzanite, but prolonged soaking should be avoided. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, it is moderately durable but sensitive to temperature changes that water can cause.

Tanzanite is associated with Sagittarius, Gemini and Libra. Its expansive spiritual energy resonates with Sagittarius's quest for wisdom and Gemini's intellectual curiosity about the metaphysical realm.

Genuine tanzanite displays trichroism, showing different colours (blue, violet, burgundy) from different angles. This is its most distinctive identifying feature. Lab-created tanzanite exists but lacks the same energetic properties as natural stone.

Tanzanite can enhance spiritual dreams and Third Eye activation during sleep. Its high vibration may be intense for some people, so start by placing it on a nearby shelf rather than under your pillow.

Tanzanite pairs beautifully with Amethyst for deepened spiritual awareness, Lapis Lazuli for wisdom and truth, Clear Quartz to amplify its high vibration, and Moonstone for enhanced intuitive dream work.
