Unakite Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with unakite — from healing properties to geology.

Unakite blends the gentle pink energy of orthoclase feldspar with the grounding green of epidote, creating a beautifully balanced stone that nurtures emotional healing at a pace your heart can handle. It is particularly powerful for releasing deep-seated emotions that have been suppressed or ignored, allowing them to surface gradually and be processed with kindness and self-compassion. Unakite teaches that true healing is not a race, supporting patient personal growth, harmonious relationships and the gentle integration of past experiences into present wisdom.
Unakite represents the patient journey of emotional healing, blending the nurturing pink of the heart with the grounding green of the earth. It teaches that lasting transformation happens gradually and that every experience, even painful ones, contributes to your wholeness.
Unakite is believed to support the reproductive system, promote healthy pregnancies and aid recovery from long-term illness. Its balancing energy is said to harmonise the emotional and physical bodies, easing conditions rooted in unresolved emotional stress.
Place unakite over the heart during meditation to gently release old emotional wounds and cultivate self-compassion. Carry it during pregnancy or keep it nearby during any process of growth and gradual transformation.
Look for pieces with a pleasing balance of pink and green, indicates the harmonious energetic blend that makes unakite so effective. Tumbled stones are ideal for pocket carry, while larger specimens work well companions.
Unakite is an altered granite composed of pink orthoclase feldspar, green epidote and clear quartz, first discovered in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, USA. It is also found in South Africa, Brazil, China and parts of Europe.

Unakite has a Mohs hardness of 6–7 and can be safely rinsed under lukewarm running water. Dry with a soft cloth. For energetic cleansing, moonlight, selenite charging and sage smoke are all effective. This nature-connected stone also responds well to being placed near living plants or on the earth. Avoid saltwater and prolonged sunlight. Store in a soft pouch.
Charge unakite under the full moon or by placing it on the earth near growing plants. Selenite plates work well. Brief morning sunlight is acceptable. Hold it over your heart chakra and programme it with intentions for emotional balance, patience and the gentle release of old wounds that no longer serve you.
Unakite was first described from specimens found in the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains along the North Carolina-Tennessee border, USA — giving the stone its name. The Unaka Mountains remain the type locality, but significant deposits also exist in other parts of the Appalachian Mountains (Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina), South Africa (where substantial quantities are produced for the commercial market), Brazil, China, Sierra Leone, and parts of Europe. Unakite is an altered granite composed of three main minerals: pink orthoclase feldspar, green epidote, and grey quartz. It forms when granite undergoes hydrothermal alteration — hot fluids circulating through the rock transform certain minerals (particularly plagioclase feldspar) into epidote, creating the distinctive pink and green combination. The stone is sometimes found as river-tumbled cobbles downstream from its source outcrops, and beach-worn unakite pebbles can be found along the shores of Lake Superior. Unakite gained popularity in the crystal market in the 1980s and has become a staple due to its attractive appearance and positive metaphysical associations. It is abundantly available from diverse sources and sustainably priced.
Unakite has a relatively recent cultural history, as it was first formally identified and named in the 1870s from specimens found in the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina-Tennessee. The stone takes its name directly from these mountains. While the Appalachian region has deep indigenous cultural traditions involving minerals and gemstones, specific use of unakite by Cherokee or other Native American peoples is not well documented — the broader tradition of valuing green and pink stones for their healing properties is, however, part of many indigenous traditions. Unakite entered the crystal healing market primarily in the 1980s, when it gained recognition as a "stone of couples" and a support for healthy pregnancy. The combination of pink feldspar (associated with the heart) and green epidote (associated with growth and healing) made it a natural fit for relationship and fertility work. In the American lapidary community, unakite is valued as a decorative stone for cabochons, carvings, and tumbled pieces. It is found as beach pebbles along the shores of Lake Superior, where it was carried by glacial action from Appalachian-source rocks. In crystal healing, unakite's gentle nurturing energy and connection to the earth have made it a go-to stone for patience, emotional balance, and supporting personal growth through gradual transformation.
Unakite is associated with Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) and Virgo (23 August – 22 September). For Scorpio, unakite supports the sign's transformative process with gentle patience — the stone encourages gradual, natural transformation rather than dramatic upheaval. For Virgo, unakite connects the sign to natural healing rhythms and supports wellness goals with patient persistence. The stone also resonates with Taurus (20 April – 20 May), supporting heart-centred growth and earth connection. Cancer (21 June – 22 July) benefits from unakite's nurturing, growth-promoting energy. As a stone of patience, gradual growth, and the integration of emotional and physical healing, unakite is recommended for earth and water signs and anyone who tends to rush their healing process.
Unakite works primarily with the Heart Chakra (Anahata) and the Root Chakra (Muladhara), with a gentle secondary connection to the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna). The Heart Chakra governs love and emotional healing; the Root Chakra governs grounding and physical health; the Third Eye governs perception. Unakite's two visible minerals — pink feldspar (Heart) and green epidote (Heart/Root) — create a dual Heart Chakra activation that combines emotional love with healing growth. To work with unakite on the Heart Chakra, place it on your chest and focus on patient, gradual emotional healing. Unakite doesn't rush the heart — it supports the slow, organic pace at which genuine healing occurs, like a plant growing from seed. For Root Chakra work, place it at the base of the spine for gentle, sustained grounding. Unakite's Third Eye connection supports the ability to see emotional patterns that need healing and to visualise the healthy future you're growing toward. It is the ideal Heart Chakra stone for long-term healing projects and pregnancy support.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Unakite to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I am balanced in heart and mind.”
“I release what no longer serves my growth.”
“I trust the timing of my life journey.”
“I nurture patience and compassion within myself.”
“I am grounded in love and open to new beginnings.”
