Rhodonite has particularly deep cultural roots in Russia, where it was discovered in the Ural Mountains in the 1790s. The Russian Imperial Court embraced the stone with extraordinary enthusiasm — master stone-cutters created monumental objects from Ural rhodonite, including enormous vases (some over 180 centimetres tall), table tops, columns, and most remarkably, a seven-tonne sarcophagus for Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna that took sixteen years to complete and remains in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg. The Hermitage Museum houses some of the finest rhodonite objects ever created. In Russia, rhodonite became known as "orletz" (eagle stone) because eagles in the Urals were observed carrying small rhodonite fragments to their nests.
