Septarian has a Mohs hardness of 3.5–4 and is a composite stone that should not be soaked in water, as the calcite portions can dissolve. A very quick rinse and immediate drying is the maximum water exposure. Sage smoke, selenite charging, moonlight and sound vibrations are safer options. Store in a padded pouch away from harder stones.

The formation of septarian nodules occurred tens to hundreds of millions of years ago, when organic matter on ancient sea floors attracted mineral deposits, forming concretions in mud.
