A very quick rinse and immediate thorough drying is the maximum water exposure it should receive. For safer cleansing, use sage smoke, selenite charging, moonlight bathing or sound vibrations. Earth burial also works well for this grounding stone. Store in a dry environment in a soft cloth away from moisture.

The biggest fake in the crystal market: "magnetic hematite" is NOT real hematite. It is a synthetic ceramic compound. Genuine hematite is NOT magnetic (or only very weakly so). If a "hematite" ring or bracelet sticks to magnets or attracts metal, it is fake. Real hematite has a distinctive metallic grey-silver lustre when polished and leaves a red-brown streak when scraped on unglazed porcelain — this is the definitive test. At Mohs 5.5-6.5, it is moderately hard. Real hematite feels notably heavy due to its iron content (specific gravity 5.0-5.3). The red streak test is conclusive: no imitation produces the same reddish-brown streak. Specular hematite has a sparkly, mirror-like quality. Botryoidal (bubbly) formations are genuine and distinctive. Natural hematite jewellery will not be strongly magnetic.

Hematite is very affordable and widely available. Tumbled stones £1-£3, raw specimens (botryoidal or kidney ore) £3-£10, palm stones £4-£10. Spheres £8-£18 for 4-5 cm, towers £6-£15. Polished hematite has a distinctive metallic silver-black lustre. The most valued forms are natural botryoidal (bubbly) specimens and specular hematite with mirror-like sparkle. Key factors: lustre quality, form (botryoidal and specular most prized), size. Jewellery is popular: rings £5-£15, pendants £6-£15, bracelets £8-£20. Note that magnetic hematite sold widely is actually synthetic ceramic and not real hematite at all. Comparable to black obsidian in price, cheaper than black tourmaline. Red flags: magnetic hematite (always fake — real hematite is not magnetic), lightweight pieces that are likely plastic. No investment potential.
