Peridot Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with peridot — from healing properties to geology.

Peridot radiates a fresh, vibrant green energy that feels like the first warm day of spring, dissolving heaviness and inviting lightness, joy and renewal into your life. It is a powerful cleanser of the heart and solar plexus chakras, releasing old baggage such , resentment and self-sabotage that may be blocking your path to happiness and prosperity. Known stone of compassion, peridot encourages you to look at the past with wisdom rather than regret and step forward into a brighter, more abundant future.
Peridot is the stone of compassion and abundance, radiating warm solar energy that dissolves old guilt, resentment and patterns of self-sabotage. It symbolises renewal and the promise of new growth, much like the first green shoots of spring.
Peridot is believed to support the heart, lungs and digestive system, acting tonic for overall vitality and wellbeing. Its detoxifying energy is said to help the body release toxins and reduce stress-related skin conditions.
Wear peridot over the heart to release old emotional patterns and open yourself to new love and friendship. Place it on the solar plexus to strengthen confidence and personal power during times of change.
The most desirable peridot has a pure olive-green colour without brownish undertones. Larger, well-saturated specimens are particularly energetic, though even small stones carry refreshing heart-healing properties.
Peridot is the gem-quality variety of olivine, a magnesium iron silicate that forms deep in the Earth's mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic activity. It is one of the few gemstones found in meteorites, with terrestrial sources in Egypt, Myanmar, Pakistan and Arizona.

Peridot has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 and can be safely rinsed under lukewarm water. Dry with a soft cloth. For energetic cleansing, brief sunlight exposure energises this solar stone beautifully. Moonlight, selenite charging and sage smoke are also effective. Avoid saltwater, harsh chemicals, steam cleaning and sudden temperature changes which can fracture peridot. Store in a soft pouch to prevent scratching.
Charge peridot in brief morning sunlight (15–20 minutes) to energise this solar stone. Full moon charging, selenite plates and clear quartz clusters are also effective. Hold peridot over your heart or solar plexus chakra and programme it with intentions for renewal, abundance and releasing old guilt or resentment.
Peridot (gem-quality olivine) has one of the most dramatic sourcing stories in the gem world. The tiny volcanic island of Zabargad (St. John's Island) in the Red Sea off Egypt was the world's primary source for over 3,500 years, and ancient Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun." Today, the majority of commercial peridot comes from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, USA — which produces an estimated 80–95% of the world's supply, with the stones weathering out of basalt on mesa tops and collected by tribal members. Other important sources include China (Hebei Province), Myanmar (Mogok), Pakistan (the Suppat district in Kohistan, which produces the world's finest large stones), Vietnam, Tanzania, and Norway (the island of Seiland). Peridot is one of the few gemstones found in only one colour — green — caused by iron in its crystal structure. It forms deep in the Earth's mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic activity, making it one of few gems of mantle origin. Extraterrestrial peridot has been found in pallasite meteorites and even in cosmic dust. The Apache reservation stones are ethically sourced, with revenues supporting the tribal community directly.
Peridot has been treasured for over 3,500 years, with a cultural history deeply connected to the sun and light. The ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun" and mined it from the volcanic island of Zabargad (St. John's Island) in the Red Sea from at least 1500 BCE. The mines were so valued that they were guarded by sentries with orders to kill any unauthorised visitors, and mining was reportedly conducted at night, when the stone's glow supposedly made it easier to find. Many gemstones historically attributed to emerald may actually have been peridot — some scholars believe Cleopatra's famous "emerald" collection was partly peridot. The stone adorns the Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne Cathedral (200 carats, long thought to be emerald). In medieval European tradition, peridot was prescribed for asthma, fear of the dark, and nightmares. Islamic gem traditions value peridot highly, and it is one of the few gemstones mentioned in the Quran. In Hawaiian culture, peridot crystals from Kilauea volcano are called the "tears of Pele" after the volcano goddess. Modern crystal healing associates peridot with the heart and solar plexus chakras, prosperity, and emotional release. The Apache reservation mines in Arizona have made peridot one of the most accessibly sourced coloured gemstones.
Peridot is the August birthstone, powerfully associated with Leo (23 July – 22 August) and Virgo (23 August – 22 September). For Leo, peridot's golden-green "gem of the sun" energy amplifies the sign's natural radiance, generosity, and creative warmth. For Virgo, peridot supports the sign's connection to healing, nature, and emotional release. The stone also resonates with Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December), supporting expansion, optimism, and the pursuit of joy. Libra (23 September – 22 October) benefits from peridot's harmonising energy and beauty. Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) finds peridot helpful for releasing jealousy and emotional baggage. In Vedic astrology, peridot is associated with the planet Mercury, making it supportive of Gemini and Virgo (both Mercury-ruled signs). As the only gemstone found in meteorites and on other planets, peridot carries a unique cosmic-solar energy.
Peridot works primarily with the Heart Chakra (Anahata) and the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura). The Heart Chakra governs love, forgiveness, and emotional release; the Solar Plexus governs confidence, personal power, and joy. Peridot's golden-green colour places it precisely between these two centres, creating a bridge of light-hearted, joyful energy. Unlike deeper green heart stones that work with serious emotional healing, peridot brings sunshine to the Heart Chakra — helping release jealousy, resentment, and old emotional baggage with a sense of lightness and relief. To work with peridot on the Heart Chakra, place it on your chest and focus on the specific emotion you want to release. Visualise golden-green light dissolving the heavy feeling and replacing it with buoyancy. For Solar Plexus work, place it above the navel to enhance confidence and manifest abundance with an open heart. Peridot is one of the best chakra stones for those who tend toward emotional heaviness and need a lighter, sunnier approach to heart work.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Peridot to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I welcome abundance and prosperity into my life.”
“I release jealousy and embrace gratitude.”
“I am renewed, refreshed and full of vitality.”
“I forgive easily and move forward with an open heart.”
“I attract positive opportunities wherever I go.”
