Blue Obsidian Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with blue obsidian — from healing properties to geology.

Blue Obsidian is a striking blue variety of volcanic glass that combines the protective and truth-revealing properties of obsidian with the communication-enhancing energy of blue stones. It is one of the rarer obsidian varieties and is particularly valued by those who work with the Throat and Third Eye Chakras. Blue Obsidian helps you communicate difficult truths with compassion, enhances psychic vision, and provides powerful protection during spiritual work.
Blue Obsidian symbolises the power of spoken truth and the courage to communicate authentically. It represents clarity of thought, psychic vision, and emotional honesty.
Blue Obsidian enhances verbal communication, sharpens psychic abilities, protects during spiritual work, aids in processing and releasing grief, and helps you speak difficult truths with compassion.
Hold Blue Obsidian at your throat during communication-focused meditations. Carry it when you need to speak difficult truths. Place it near your workspace for mental clarity. Use it in divination and scrying practices.
Genuine Blue Obsidian should have a vitreous (glassy) lustre with conchoidal fracture patterns. Beware of blue-dyed glass sold as Blue Obsidian. Natural specimens often have a more subtle, smoky blue colour rather than vivid blue.
Blue Obsidian is a form of volcanic glass (mineraloid) that gets its blue colour from trace elements and gas bubbles that scatter light during rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. Like all obsidian, it forms when lava cools too quickly for crystals to grow. Hardness 5-5.5 Mohs. Naturally occurring blue obsidian is rare; sources include Mexico, Greece, and parts of the USA.

Blue Obsidian can be cleaned with warm water and a soft cloth. As a form of volcanic glass, it is relatively durable (5-5.5 Mohs) but can chip if dropped. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. It is generally safe in water for short periods but prolonged soaking is not recommended. Energetically cleanse with sage smoke, moonlight, sound vibration, or by burying in the earth briefly. Charge under moonlight or by placing near Clear Quartz.
Blue Obsidian charges well in moonlight, particularly during the waning moon for releasing and communication work. Brief morning sunlight is acceptable but avoid prolonged exposure. Place near other Throat Chakra stones (Lapis Lazuli, Blue Lace Agate) for sympathetic charging. Sound charging with tuning forks or singing bowls in the G note (Throat Chakra frequency) is particularly effective. You can also charge by holding it near running water — a stream or even a tap — as the sound of water activates its communicative energy.
Natural Blue Obsidian is found in limited volcanic regions. Notable sources include the Greek islands (particularly in the Aegean), Iceland, parts of Mexico, and some locations in the western United States. It forms in the same volcanic environments as Black Obsidian but requires specific trace elements to produce the blue colouration. Due to its rarity, much "Blue Obsidian" on the market is actually man-made glass. Authentic natural specimens command higher prices and should come with provenance information from reputable dealers.
Blue Obsidian is a rare variety of volcanic glass with a distinctive blue-grey to deep blue colour. Natural Blue Obsidian is found in limited locations, primarily in Greece, Iceland, and parts of Mexico. Like all Obsidian, it forms when felsic lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. Ancient Mesoamerican civilisations used various forms of Obsidian for weapons, mirrors, and divination tools. Blue Obsidian specifically has gained popularity in modern crystal healing for its association with communication and the Throat Chakra, distinguishing it from the more protective Black Obsidian.

Blue Obsidian FAQs

Common questions about blue obsidian

Blue obsidian is a rare variety of volcanic glass displaying blue to blue-grey tones. Natural blue obsidian gets its colour from trace mineral inclusions during formation. It combines obsidian's truth-revealing properties with the calming, communicative energy of blue crystals.

Blue obsidian is valued for enhancing communication, supporting psychic development, and revealing truth with compassion. Unlike black obsidian's intense mirror effect, blue obsidian reveals truths more gently and helps you communicate difficult insights diplomatically. It activates both the Throat and Third Eye chakras.

Natural blue obsidian does exist but is quite rare. Much of the vivid blue obsidian sold commercially is man-made glass. Natural specimens tend to have a subtler blue-grey tone rather than a vivid cobalt blue. Always purchase from reputable dealers who can confirm the origin.

Like all obsidian, blue obsidian should avoid prolonged water exposure. Brief rinsing is acceptable, but the stone can chip along edges when wet. Prefer smoke cleansing, moonlight, or selenite charging plates for regular energetic maintenance.

Blue obsidian works primarily with the Throat chakra for enhanced communication and the Third Eye chakra for intuition and psychic development. This dual-chakra activation makes it particularly powerful for people who need to communicate spiritual or intuitive insights clearly.

Blue obsidian shares black obsidian's truth-revealing nature but works through the Throat and Third Eye chakras rather than the Root. Blue obsidian is gentler, focusing on communication and intuitive insight, whilst black obsidian is more intense, targeting shadow work and deep transformation.

Place blue obsidian on your Throat during meditation to enhance communication abilities, hold it during divination or tarot for clearer psychic insights, or keep it on your desk to support honest, diplomatic communication at work. It pairs well with lapis lazuli for enhanced truth-speaking.

Cleanse blue obsidian with moonlight, smoke from sage or palo santo, sound healing, or placing it on a selenite plate. Avoid water and direct sunlight for extended periods. Like all obsidian, regular cleansing after use is recommended.
