Bloodstone Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with bloodstone — from healing properties to geology.

Bloodstone is a powerful healing crystal that has been prized since antiquity for its ability to purify and fortify the blood, boost physical vitality and instil courage in the face of adversity. Its dark green jasper base with vivid red spots of iron oxide creates a striking appearance that mirrors its dual nature: deeply grounding yet energetically stimulating. It is an excellent companion for athletes, anyone recovering from illness, or those who simply need a robust boost of physical and emotional stamina.
Bloodstone is the stone of courageous vitality, a warrior crystal that has fortified the brave and healed the wounded since the earliest days of human civilisation. Its dark green body marked with vivid red spots of iron oxide symbolises the union of life force and earth strength. Bloodstone represents resilience, the ability to endure hardship and emerge stronger, and the primal connection between our physical body and the earth that sustains it. It teaches that true courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to keep moving forward.
Bloodstone is believed to purify the blood, support the liver, kidneys and spleen, and boost the immune system during periods of illness or recovery. It is particularly valued for its ability to stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation and support the body through physical challenges requiring endurance and stamina. Crystal healers use bloodstone to support women during menstruation, ease nausea and help the body detoxify after illness or overindulgence.
Carry bloodstone when you need extra physical stamina or are recovering from illness to support the body's healing processes. Place it over the heart during meditation to draw courage and strengthen your resolve.
Select pieces with vivid, well-defined red spots against a rich dark green background. Specimens with larger red markings are traditionally considered to carry stronger vitality-boosting properties.
Bloodstone, also known , is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) with dark green colour from chlorite or amphibole inclusions and red spots from iron oxide. It is found in India, Brazil, China, Australia and Scotland.

Elements

Bloodstone has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 and is safe to rinse under lukewarm running water. Dry with a soft cloth. For deeper cleansing, moonlight bathing, selenite charging and sage smoke are all effective. Bloodstone can also be cleansed by placing it on the earth or in a garden bed for a few hours to reconnect with its grounding energy. Avoid prolonged sunlight which may fade the red spots over time. Store in a soft pouch.
Charge bloodstone under the full moon or by placing it on the earth for several hours. Brief morning sunlight also energises this warrior stone. Selenite plates and clear quartz clusters are effective alternatives. Hold bloodstone over your heart and root chakras alternately while breathing deeply, programming it with intentions of courage, vitality and strength.
Bloodstone (heliotrope) has been treasured since antiquity, with the most historically significant deposits in the Kathiawar Peninsula of Gujarat, India. India remains the primary commercial source today, producing the dark green chalcedony with distinctive red jasper inclusions that resemble drops of blood. Other notable deposits exist in Brazil, Australia, China, Madagascar, and Scotland. The island of Rum in Scotland's Inner Hebrides has yielded fine specimens, and the stone has deep roots in European medieval tradition. Bloodstone forms in low-temperature hydrothermal environments where silica-rich fluids deposit green chalcedony with iron oxide inclusions. The red spots are caused by iron oxide (hematite) inclusions scattered through the green chalcedony matrix. In medieval Europe, bloodstone was believed to be formed from drops of Christ's blood falling on green jasper at the crucifixion, making it one of the most valued carved gemstones for religious seals and signet rings. Most commercial bloodstone is sustainably sourced from established Indian cutting centres.
Bloodstone (heliotrope) carries one of the most powerful symbolic traditions in Western culture. In medieval Christian tradition, the red spots were believed to be drops of Christ's blood that fell on green jasper at the foot of the cross during the crucifixion. This legend made bloodstone one of the most sacred carved stones in Christianity — it was widely used for sculpting scenes of the crucifixion, martyrdom, and flagellation. The name "heliotrope" comes from the Greek "helios" (sun) and "trepein" (to turn), as the ancient Greeks believed the stone could turn the sun red when placed in water. Pliny the Elder described bloodstone as enabling invisibility — a reputation that persisted into the Middle Ages. In ancient Mesopotamia, bloodstone was dipped in cold water and applied to the body to stop haemorrhaging, a sympathetic magic practice based on its blood-like spots. Indian warriors carried bloodstone as a talisman for courage in battle, and Ayurvedic tradition used it as a blood purifier. Bloodstone was the traditional birthstone for March before modern lists replaced it with aquamarine. In sigillography (seal carving), bloodstone was second only to carnelian as a material for intaglio seals and signet rings among European nobility. The stone continues to hold deep significance in many esoteric traditions.
Bloodstone is traditionally and powerfully associated with Aries (21 March – 19 April), the warrior sign ruled by Mars. Both bloodstone and Aries carry the energy of courage, vitality, and direct action. Bloodstone amplifies Aries' natural bravery whilst helping to channel impulsive energy constructively. The stone also resonates with Pisces (19 February – 20 March) — bloodstone was historically the original March birthstone before aquamarine replaced it in modern lists. For Pisces, bloodstone provides grounding and physical vitality that balances the sign's dreamy, spiritual nature. Scorpio (23 October – 21 November), also ruled by Mars, benefits from bloodstone's transformative energy and its association with the cycles of life and death. Leo (23 July – 22 August) finds bloodstone supportive of courage and noble action. The stone is particularly beneficial for all fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and anyone whose natal chart features strong Mars placements.
Bloodstone works primarily with the Root Chakra (Muladhara) and the Heart Chakra (Anahata), creating a powerful connection between physical vitality and emotional courage. The Root Chakra governs survival, physical energy, and our connection to the body. The Heart Chakra governs love, courage, and emotional resilience. Bloodstone bridges these centres, channelling grounding life-force energy upward to the heart, where it becomes courage, compassion, and the strength to act from love rather than fear. The stone's green body (Heart Chakra colour) with red spots (Root Chakra colour) physically embodies this connection. To work with bloodstone in chakra practice, place it at the heart centre and focus on drawing strength and vitality upward from the earth. Alternatively, hold it in your dominant hand during meditation and visualise green and red energy swirling together, creating a courageous, grounded heart. Bloodstone is particularly effective during times when you need physical stamina combined with emotional bravery.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Bloodstone to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I am filled with courage, vitality, and life force energy”
“I am grounded in my body and empowered to take action”
“I face challenges with bravery and unwavering determination”
“My health is vibrant and my body heals with strength and ease”
“I honour the warrior spirit within me and act with integrity”
“I am resilient and I endure through every obstacle”
