Howlite Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with howlite — from healing properties to geology.

Howlite is a beautifully calming stone with a porcelain-like white surface streaked with delicate grey veining, embodying the peaceful energy of stillness and patience. It is one of the most effective crystals for insomnia and an overactive mind, gently absorbing anger, stress and anxiety and replacing them with a sense of deep, unhurried calm. Howlite teaches the art of patience and emotional intelligence, helping you navigate stressful situations with grace and reminding you that not every problem requires an immediate reaction.
Howlite is the stone of patience and perspective, teaching you to slow down, listen more deeply and respond rather than react. Its calming white energy symbolises the peace that comes from acceptance and emotional awareness.
Howlite is believed to calm the nervous system, reduce insomnia and ease tension headaches caused by stress and overthinking. It is also said to support calcium absorption, strengthen bones and teeth, and balance calcium levels within the body.
Place howlite under your pillow or on your bedside table to calm racing thoughts and promote deep, restorative sleep. Carry it in your pocket during stressful days to maintain patience and emotional equilibrium.
Choose howlite with a clean white base and well-defined grey or black veining patterns. Be aware that howlite is frequently dyed to imitate turquoise, so if you want genuine howlite, ensure it retains its natural white colouring.
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1868 by the chemist Henry How. It forms in evaporite deposits nodules and is found primarily in Canada and parts of the United States.

Howlite is a soft crystal (3.5 Mohs) that is porous and should not be placed in water, as it will absorb moisture and may crack or discolour. Cleanse with sage smoke, selenite charging, moonlight bathing or sound vibrations from a singing bowl. You can also place it on a bed of dry brown rice overnight. Store wrapped in soft cloth away from harder stones and moisture.
Charge howlite under the full moon overnight for the most gentle method. Selenite plates are also ideal. Avoid sunlight and water. Sound charging with a gentle singing bowl resonates with howlite's calming frequency. Hold it and set intentions for patience, calm and restful sleep to programme it.
Howlite was first discovered in 1868 near Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, by the mineralogist Henry How, after local miners encountered an unfamiliar mineral that was interfering with their gypsum quarrying operations. Today, the primary commercial source of howlite is the United States, particularly California's Tick Canyon (now exhausted) and deposits in Nevada and the Mojave Desert. Other sources include Turkey, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Pakistan, and other parts of Canada. Howlite forms in evaporite deposits where boron-rich solutions interact with calcium-bearing minerals. It typically occurs as cauliflower-like nodular masses within gypsum and anhydrite beds, and well-formed crystals are extremely rare — only a few known specimens exist. Howlite's most notable commercial characteristic is its ability to accept dyes readily due to its porous nature. It is commonly dyed blue and sold as "turquenite" or even misleadingly marketed as turquoise. It's also dyed red (as "red howlite" or imitation coral) and in other colours. When purchasing, be aware that vibrantly coloured howlite has always been dyed — natural howlite is white with grey veining. Genuine undyed howlite is affordable and sustainably available.
Howlite has a modest but interesting cultural history. First discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada, the mineral was named after Henry How, the geologist who first described it. Howlite's initial reception was rather inglorious — it was identified because it was causing problems for gypsum miners, appearing as an unwanted contaminant in their quarry. The mineral's cultural significance developed primarily through its role as an imitator. Because of its porosity, howlite readily absorbs dyes, and it has been used extensively as a turquoise substitute since the mid-20th century. This practice has been both its commercial blessing and ethical burden — dyed howlite sold as "turquoise" or "turquenite" has caused ongoing controversy in the gem trade. In its natural white-and-grey form, howlite was relatively ignored until the crystal healing movement of the 1980s discovered its calming qualities. It rapidly became one of the most recommended crystals for insomnia, anxiety, and anger management. The irony of a stone discovered as a nuisance becoming one of the most widely sold calming crystals is not lost on mineralogists. White howlite has also become enormously popular in minimalist jewellery and "healing bead" bracelets, where its marble-like appearance provides a clean aesthetic.
Howlite is associated with Gemini (21 May – 20 June) and Virgo (23 August – 22 September). For Gemini, howlite calms the sign's restless mental energy, helping to quiet the constant stream of thoughts and facilitate restful sleep. For Virgo, howlite eases the critical inner voice and worry that can keep this analytical sign awake at night. The stone also benefits Scorpio (23 October – 21 November), helping manage the intensity of emotions that can become overwhelming. Aries (21 March – 19 April) finds howlite useful for cooling fiery temper and practising patience. Cancer (21 June – 22 July) benefits from howlite's gentle calming energy during emotional turbulence. As a calming stone par excellence, howlite is recommended for all signs during periods of stress, insomnia, or emotional overwhelm — it is one of the most universally soothing crystals available.
Howlite works primarily with the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) and the Third Eye Chakra (Ajna), but with a unique calming emphasis. The Crown Chakra connects us to higher consciousness and spiritual peace; the Third Eye governs mental activity and perception. Howlite's speciality is calming overactive upper chakras — when the Third Eye is spinning with anxious thoughts and the Crown is buzzing with overwhelm, howlite brings stillness and quiet. This makes it distinct from stones that open or activate these centres; howlite actually slows them down to a peaceful, restful state. To work with howlite in chakra practice, place it on your forehead before sleep, breathing slowly and visualising your racing thoughts settling like snowflakes. For Crown Chakra calming, place it at the top of the head and visualise peaceful white light. Howlite is the premier stone for when the upper chakras need rest rather than stimulation — after intense spiritual work, during insomnia, or when anxiety has the mind in overdrive.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Howlite to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I am calm, patient and at peace with myself.”
“I release anger and embrace understanding.”
“My mind is quiet and my thoughts are clear.”
“I approach every situation with patience and wisdom.”
“I sleep deeply and wake refreshed and renewed.”

Howlite FAQs

Common questions about howlite

Howlite is a deeply calming stone that works through the Crown chakra to soothe an overactive mind and promote restful sleep. It is one of the most effective crystals for insomnia, anxiety and racing thoughts. Howlite teaches patience, helps dissolve anger and encourages emotional equilibrium.

Place howlite under your pillow or on your bedside table to calm racing thoughts and promote deep, restorative sleep. Carry it in your pocket during stressful days to maintain patience and emotional equilibrium. It is particularly helpful during meditation for quieting a busy mind.

Place howlite in the bedroom for sleep support and anxiety relief. It works well in any space where calm is desired, such as therapy rooms or quiet reading nooks. White howlite also makes a beautiful decorative piece whilst radiating peaceful, calming vibrations.

Howlite should be kept away from water. With a Mohs hardness of only 3.5, it is a soft stone that can be damaged by prolonged water exposure. Brief rinsing is possible but not recommended for regular cleansing. Use dry methods instead to preserve its condition.

Cleanse howlite using sage smoke, sound vibration from a singing bowl, or by placing it on a selenite plate overnight. Moonlight charging is gentle and effective. Avoid water, salt and prolonged sunlight. Howlite is often dyed to resemble turquoise, so water exposure may also affect dyed specimens.

Howlite works primarily with the Crown chakra, connecting you to higher states of calm awareness. Its Crown chakra activation helps quiet the constant chatter of the mind, promoting deep stillness and the ability to access peaceful, meditative states with greater ease.

Howlite is associated with Gemini and Virgo. For Gemini, it calms their sometimes overactive mental energy and promotes restful sleep. For Virgo, it eases anxiety and perfectionist tendencies, encouraging patience and acceptance of imperfection.

Howlite pairs beautifully with amethyst for enhanced sleep and calm, lepidolite for deeper anxiety relief, moonstone for emotional balance, and selenite for spiritual peace. These combinations create a profoundly soothing energy, ideal for bedtime and stress relief.
