Green Amethyst Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with green amethyst — from healing properties to geology.

Green Amethyst, also known as Prasiolite, is a rare and beautiful green variety of quartz that forms when amethyst is naturally heated by nearby volcanic activity. It carries the spiritual properties of amethyst combined with the heart-healing energy of green stones, creating a unique bridge between emotional and spiritual healing. Green Amethyst is prized for its ability to help you connect compassion with wisdom, making it excellent for those on a spiritual path who want to remain heart-centred.
Green Amethyst symbolises the union of heart wisdom and spiritual awareness. It represents growth, transformation, and the ability to see the sacred in everyday life.
Green Amethyst heals heartbreak, attracts prosperity aligned with your highest good, deepens meditation, stimulates compassion, and helps integrate spiritual insights into daily emotional life.
Meditate with Green Amethyst over your heart chakra to bridge emotional and spiritual healing. Wear it as jewellery near the heart. Place it in your garden or houseplants to encourage growth. Use in manifestation work focused on abundance and heart-centred goals.
Look for a soft, natural-looking green — overly vivid green suggests heavy treatment. Genuine prasiolite has a subtle, sage-like green. Check for clarity — good specimens are transparent. Natural Green Amethyst is rare; ask about origin.
Green Amethyst (prasiolite) is a green variety of quartz formed when amethyst is naturally heated to 300-500°C by geothermal activity or proximity to volcanic intrusions. The heat reduces the iron impurities that create purple colour, producing a soft green hue instead. Natural prasiolite is quite rare; most commercial green amethyst is heat-treated amethyst. Hardness 7 Mohs. Found in Brazil, Poland, and Canada.

Green Amethyst (Prasiolite) shares the same care requirements as standard Amethyst. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure as the green colour can fade with UV light — this is especially important as most Prasiolite is heat-treated. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe but steam cleaners should be avoided. Energetically cleanse with moonlight, sage smoke, running water, or sound. Charge under the light of a full moon rather than sunlight.
Green Amethyst charges beautifully in moonlight, especially during the new or full moon. Avoid direct sunlight as it can fade the green colour over time. Place on a Selenite plate or near Clear Quartz for amplified charging. Earth charging by placing on natural soil or moss for a few hours connects it to its growth and abundance energy. Sound charging with a heart-note singing bowl resonates with its Heart Chakra connection. Visualise green light flowing into the stone while holding it during meditation.
Natural Prasiolite is found in very limited quantities near Montezuma in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and in a small deposit in Poland. The vast majority of Green Amethyst available commercially is heat-treated purple Amethyst, primarily from Brazilian sources. Only Amethyst from specific geological conditions contains the right iron content to turn green when heated. Some natural Prasiolite has also been reported from Namibia and parts of Canada, though in very small quantities. The heat treatment is stable and permanent, and is universally accepted in the gem trade.
Natural Prasiolite is extremely rare in nature, found primarily in a single mine in Brazil. Most Green Amethyst on the market is created by heat-treating purple Amethyst from specific deposits (primarily Montezuma, Brazil) at 500°C, which transforms the colour from purple to green. The name Prasiolite comes from the Greek "prason" (leek) and "lithos" (stone). While heat treatment of Amethyst has been practised for centuries, Green Amethyst only gained commercial popularity in the late 20th century. It is sometimes confused with green Fluorite or Peridot but has distinct optical properties.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Green Amethyst to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I open my heart to abundance in all its beautiful forms”
“I grow and flourish like the living earth around me”
“My heart and mind work in perfect harmony”
“I attract prosperity through authenticity and compassion”
“I am worthy of love, growth, and spiritual expansion”
“I bridge spiritual wisdom with heartfelt action”
“My inner garden blooms with peace, love, and abundance”

Green Amethyst FAQs

Common questions about green amethyst

Green amethyst, properly called prasiolite, is a rare green variety of quartz. Most commercial prasiolite is created by heat-treating amethyst or citrine at specific temperatures, turning it green. Natural prasiolite is extremely rare, found primarily in Brazil and Poland.

Green amethyst bridges the Heart and Crown chakras, combining emotional healing with spiritual awareness. It promotes compassion, self-acceptance, and spiritual growth grounded in love. It is particularly valued for connecting spiritual insights to heart-centred action.

Most green amethyst (prasiolite) on the market is heat-treated amethyst. Natural prasiolite is very rare. Both forms are genuine quartz and carry similar metaphysical properties. The heat treatment simply mimics a process that occurs naturally deep within the earth.

Yes, green amethyst is water safe with a Mohs hardness of 7. It can be cleansed briefly in running water. However, avoid prolonged sunlight exposure which may cause the green colour to fade over time, particularly in heat-treated specimens.

Green amethyst uniquely bridges the Heart chakra (green ray) and Crown chakra (amethyst family), creating a powerful connection between emotional wisdom and spiritual awareness. This makes it exceptional for integrating spiritual experiences into everyday compassionate living.

Green amethyst (prasiolite) has the same quartz composition as purple amethyst but with a different trace element configuration that produces its green colour. Energetically, purple amethyst focuses on Third Eye/Crown spiritual work, whilst green amethyst focuses on Heart/Crown heart-centred spirituality.

Cleanse green amethyst with moonlight, running water, sage smoke, or selenite. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which may fade the green colour. Like all quartz family members, it responds well to most cleansing methods.

Green amethyst (prasiolite) is moderately priced, typically more affordable than fine purple amethyst. Heat-treated specimens are widely available and reasonably priced. Natural prasiolite commands higher prices due to its rarity but is still accessible compared to precious gemstones.
