Emerald has a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8 but often contains natural inclusions that make it more fragile than its hardness suggests. Brief lukewarm water rinses are safe — dry immediately. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes. For energetic cleansing, moonlight bathing and selenite charging are the safest methods. Sage smoke and sound cleansing are also suitable. Store separately from other stones in a padded pouch to prevent chips.
