Today, the most spectacular specimens come from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia (widely considered the world's most important mineral locality for variety), the Democratic Republic of Congo (particularly the Mindouli and Renéville districts), and the Mammoth-St. Anthony mine in Arizona, USA. Other sources include Chile, Peru, Iran, and Russia. Dioptase forms in the oxidised zones of copper ore deposits in arid environments, where copper-rich solutions react with silica in the presence of water.
