Banded Agate

Banded agate is a variety of chalcedony displaying distinctive parallel bands of colour, typically in earth tones of brown, cream, grey, and white. These bands form naturally over millions of years as silica-rich solutions deposit layer by layer inside volcanic rock cavities.

Banded agate is valued for its stabilising and grounding properties. It promotes emotional balance, inner stability, and a sense of security. Each band is believed to represent a layer of protection, making it an excellent stone for building resilience and overcoming emotional turbulence.

Yes, banded agate is water safe with a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7. It can be briefly cleansed in running water without damage. However, avoid prolonged soaking as water may eventually seep between the bands over time.

Banded agate primarily resonates with the Root chakra, promoting grounding and security. However, its specific chakra associations can vary with colour — brown bands connect to the Root, cream bands to the Sacral, and grey bands to balance between multiple energy centres.

Banded agate forms inside volcanic rock cavities (geodes) over millions of years. Silica-rich groundwater seeps into hollow spaces and deposits microscopic quartz crystals in concentric layers. Trace minerals in each layer create the distinctive colour banding patterns.
