Amber Crystal Guide

Everything you need to know about working with amber — from healing properties to geology.

Amber is not technically a crystal but a fossilised tree resin, typically 30 to 90 million years old. Despite its organic origins, it is one of the most revered healing stones in history. Its warm, golden energy is like captured sunlight — uplifting, purifying, and deeply healing. Amber has been used as a talisman, medicine, and adornment since the Stone Age. It carries the wisdom of ancient forests and the life force of trees, making it a uniquely grounding yet energising stone.
Amber symbolises ancient wisdom, warmth, and the preservation of life force energy. It represents the connection between past and present, carrying the memory of ancient forests and the transformative power of time.
Amber is believed to draw illness from the body, cleanse the aura, promote tissue regeneration, ease pain (especially joint pain), calm the nervous system, and lift depression with its warm, sunny energy.
Wear Amber jewellery at the throat or solar plexus for warmth and healing. Carry it when you need an emotional uplift. Place it in sunny spots in your home to radiate positive energy. Use Baltic Amber teething necklaces (supervised) for children. Hold during meditation to connect with ancient earth wisdom.
Look for warmth and natural inclusions — genuine Amber feels warm to the touch (unlike glass). It should be lightweight (it floats in salt water). Inclusions of insects or plant matter increase value. The best Amber is transparent with a rich honey colour.
Amber is fossilised resin from ancient coniferous trees, primarily from the Eocene epoch (34-56 million years ago). Over millions of years, the resin underwent polymerisation and oxidation, transforming from a sticky substance to a hard, translucent gem. It often contains preserved insects, plant material, and air bubbles. Hardness 2-2.5 Mohs. Major sources: Baltic region (Lithuania, Latvia, Russia), Dominican Republic, Myanmar.

Amber is organic, not a mineral, so it requires gentle care. Clean with a soft damp cloth only — never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or chemical solutions. Avoid prolonged water exposure as it can become cloudy. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as Amber can crack or melt at relatively low temperatures. Store separately from harder stones to prevent scratching. Energetically cleanse with sage smoke, moonlight, or sound vibration rather than salt or water methods.
Amber responds best to gentle charging methods. Place in moonlight during the full moon for overnight charging. Sunlight should be avoided as it can cause cracking and cloudiness. Bury in dry earth or sand for 24 hours for deep grounding energy renewal. Amber can also be charged by holding it in your hands and breathing warm breath over it while setting intentions — this mirrors the ancient belief in Amber as solidified sunlight. Place near Clear Quartz to amplify its warm, nurturing energy.
The finest Amber comes from the Baltic region (Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Russia), where deposits are 40-60 million years old. Dominican Amber is younger (15-40 million years) but prized for its clarity and rare blue fluorescence. Other sources include Myanmar (Burmese Amber, the oldest at 100 million years), Mexico, and Indonesia. Baltic Amber accounts for approximately 80% of the world supply. Ethical sourcing is important as some Burmese Amber mines have been linked to conflict. Look for Baltic or Dominican origin for the most ethically sourced specimens.
Amber has been treasured for over 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest decorative materials used by humans. The ancient Greeks called it "elektron" — the origin of the word electricity — after discovering its static charge when rubbed. Baltic Amber was traded along the famous Amber Road, a network as significant as the Silk Road. In Chinese medicine, Amber has been used for thousands of years as "hu po" (tiger soul), believed to contain the spirit of tigers. Viking warriors wore Amber amulets for protection, and it was burned as incense in medieval churches. The oldest known Amber artifacts date back to 13,000 years ago.

Use these affirmations while holding or wearing Amber to deepen your connection with its energy. Repeat each one slowly, feeling its resonance within you.

“I carry the warmth and wisdom of ancient sunlight within me”
“I release what no longer serves me and embrace renewal”
“My life force burns bright with vitality and joy”
“I am connected to the timeless healing energy of the earth”
“I attract warmth, abundance, and positive energy”
“I honour the wisdom of my ancestors and carry it forward”
“My body is a vessel of radiant health and vitality”

Amber FAQs

Common questions about amber

Amber is not technically a crystal — it is fossilised tree resin, typically 30–90 million years old. Despite not being a mineral, amber has been treasured for its healing properties for thousands of years and is widely used in crystal healing for its warm, nurturing energy.

Amber is prized for its warm, soothing energy that relieves stress, boosts vitality, and promotes emotional balance. It is traditionally used for pain relief (especially teething in babies), clearing negative energy, and connecting with ancient earth wisdom. Its Solar Plexus chakra activation boosts confidence and creativity.

Amber should avoid prolonged water contact. As organic fossilised resin, it can become cloudy or damaged when soaked. Brief rinsing is acceptable, but cleanse amber with sunlight, moonlight, or gentle smoke instead for regular maintenance.

Real amber floats in saltwater (2 tablespoons salt per cup of water), feels warm to the touch (not cold like glass), and produces a pine-resin scent when rubbed vigorously. It may also contain tiny bubbles or organic inclusions. Fake amber (plastic or copal) sinks in saltwater and feels cold.

Amber primarily activates the Solar Plexus chakra, boosting personal power, confidence, and creative expression. It also resonates with the Sacral chakra for vitality and warmth. Its golden colour perfectly reflects its sunny, empowering energy.

Amber teething necklaces are a popular folk remedy, believed to release succinic acid when warmed by skin. However, medical authorities warn about choking and strangulation risks. If used, babies should be supervised at all times, and necklaces should be removed during sleep. Consult your paediatrician.

Most gem-quality amber ranges from 30 to 90 million years old, dating back to the Cretaceous and Eocene periods. Baltic amber, the most prized variety, is approximately 44 million years old. Some amber specimens contain preserved insects and plant material from these ancient periods.

Cleanse amber gently using moonlight, sunlight (brief exposure), sage or palo santo smoke, or sound vibrations. Avoid water, salt, and harsh chemicals. Amber is softer (Mohs 2–2.5) and more delicate than most crystals, so handle it with care during cleansing.
